About Kenya National Cleaner Production Centre

The Kenya National Cleaner Production Centre (KNCPC) is a not-for-profit Trust established in July 2000 as part of the global UNEP/UNIDO National Cleaner Production Centre program. The Centre is a technical institution specialised in Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) and Circular Economy. It was founded by the Government of Kenya through the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in July 2000 under the Country Co-operation Framework of (1999-2003) between the Kenyan Government and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Our History


1). The Centre is credited for being the mother of Environmental Impact Assessment and Audit (EIA/EA) practice in Kenya having mid-wifed the development of subsidiary legislations in particular,

  • Environmental Impact Assessment and Audit (EIA/EA) Legal Notice 101 of 2003,
  • Waste Management Regulations 2006,
  • Water Quality Regulations 2006,
  • Strategic Environmental Assessment Guidelines of 2012.
2). It was the first institution in Kenya to develop and mount a training program in EIA/EA in 2004 for Experts seeking to be registered by NEMA.

3). In 2004, KNCPC was licensed by NEMA as firm of EIA/EA Experts .

4). Since 2006 when the EIA/EA became mandatory in Kenya, The Centre has cumulatively;

  • Undertaken 600 Environmental Audits (EAs),
  • Undertaken 300 Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs)
  • and developed Environmental and Social Safeguard instruments for various sectors including in water, manufacturing, energy, health care, education, infrastructure and agriculture.

5). The Centre also provided technical support in formulating the following;
  • National Environmental Policy,
  • Climate Change Response Strategy and its Action Plans,
  • Kenya’s Green Economy Strategy and Implementation Plan at the steering committee level.
The KNCPC is certified by the Kenya Bankers Association/International Finance Cooperation under the Sustainable Financing Initiative (SFI) to provide Environmental and Social Sustain ability services to Financial Institutions as part of due diligence. The Centre has trained over 1,000 ESIA experts, over 1,000 RECP Experts in the country and across East Africa
