Soroptimist International (SI) is an international organization for women in management and the professions working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women. In Kenya there are 10 Soroptimist Clubs, which fall under the SI Union of Kenya. During 2009, Soroptmist International actively involved in various awareness raising on climate change activities under the project entitled: “Women and Climate Change” A Climate Change Working Group, established within the Danish Union The SI Denmark and Kenya (SI D/K).
The project “Woman and Climate Change” Supports climate change mitigation and adaptation by women in households, industries and to capacity build members of the Union of Soroptimists International Kenya. It’s a project sponsored by The Union of Soroptimist International Denmark and being implemented by The Union of Soroptimist International Kenya and The Kenya National Cleaner Production Centre (KNCPC) .The project runs in the period 2010-2012.
This project is designed to principally promote the implementation of Cleaner and Production activities in selected enterprises. The project primarily focuses on the enterprise resources use, associated environmental impacts and productive output .It is intended that this Pilot project shall form a basis for Climate Change and Cleaner Production (CC &CP) interventions in the enterprises that participated and will lead to more efficient, competitive and less polluting enterprises.
The project aims at:
- Setting a portfolio of Climate Change and Cleaner Production projects across the country.
- Creating grassroots level awareness on climate change
- Implementation of Cleaner Production technologies and techniques in a number of textile, hotels, schools and fresh produce enterprises.
The participating companies include:
- Frigoken Ltd- Nairobi
- Kaputiei Safariland hotel, Kitengela,
- Temudo School – Kisumu,
- Bondo University College,
- Rivatex Ltd - Eldoret,
- Kenyatta University North Coast Beach Hotel
These companies have already realized savings by implementation of No-cost and Low-cost CP options.
