Vision: Competitive Kenyan Industries that are cleaner and more Resource Efficient
Mandate: To promote resource efficient and cleaner production (RECP) practices in enterprises in order to improve competitiveness and environmental excellence through material, water and energy efficiency as well as waste minimisation.
This should lead to better management technology in manufacturing and service industry where internal and external resources are controlled and highly organized to achieve higher productivity.
Vision 2030, Management Technology and the KNCPC Mandate
The Government of Kenya’s Vision 2030 sets the development agenda for the country where Kenya must sustain a growth rate of 10% per annum for the next 20 years up to 2030. Manufacturing is one key sector under the Vision that is expected to deliver the envisaged growth rate through improved competitiveness in manufacturing in order to promote efficiencies.
In support of this Vision, the Master Plan for Kenyan Industrial Development calls for high management technology levels to achieve high productivity. The realization of this requires the application of Resource Efficient and Cleaner technologies and techniques in the management of manufacturing systems. The Kenya National Cleaner Production Centre is the nodal agency for this realization.
When looking at development levels of industrial technological capacity in Kenya, management technologies are hardly practiced despite the fact that management technology is considered an integral part of industrial technology. Management technology is increasingly becoming important in competitiveness creation of manufactured goods requiring Kenyan industry to be exposed to the best management technology in manufacturing as a philosophy of each company. The Centre is playing a key role in upgrading industry by assisting it to pursue infinite innovation, resource efficiency and minimizing wastage.
The Centre has four major functions. These include:
- In-plant assessments for Resource Efficiency & waste reduction:
The Centre has the mandate to assist industries to implement energy, water and material efficiency, pollution prevention and product innovation through technical assistance at plant level. A learning-by-doing approach is applied.
- Training in Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production.
Through learning-by doing training in resource management (energy, water and raw material) in the production process, the KNCPC has the role to develop core staff in industry. This ensures that plant personnel participating in in-plant assessments retain the ability to continually identify and implement CP measures, product innovation including design and packaging and informs other relevant parties e.g. sub-sector organizations, government, research institutes, financial institutes, universities and consultants of the advantages of CP. Other training courses offered include: Environmental Impact Assessment and Audit, Clean Development Mechanism and Climate Change, Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility, Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Cleaner Production (CP)/Pollution Prevention (PP), Waste Minimization (WM), and Energy Audits (EA).
- Information dissemination:
The Centre provides technical information on the industry, sectoral and national potential for cleaner production, shares experience with interested partners through CP case studies and promotes its services.
- Policy Analysis and Advice:
The Centre works with Government institutions with an aim of developing relevant legislation and policies that prioritize the adoption of resource efficiency and cleaner production.
