The Center has completed Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production audits in some 90 enterprises in Kenya, which covers more than 20 industrial sectors including chemical, tea, sugar, beverages, distillery, leather, pulp and paper, textile, printing and dyeing, electroplating, building materials, horticulture, hotels, food processing, hospitals, steel, bakery, milling, dairy, slaughterhouses and fish. From the cleaner production audits for enterprises completed in Kenya, implementation of cleaner production improvement measures, an average of 20% reduction in pollutants, energy and water use has been realized and the economic benefits achieved by each enterprise amounts to at least Kshs. 2-3 million per year for medium enterprises.
For large enterprises, savings per company is greater than Kshs. 5 million whilst it can be as low as Kshs. 100,000 for small enterprises. Cumulatively, companies have realized savings of at least US$ 1.38million through avoided waste generation and resource efficiencyCurrently the centre has embarked on the LVEMP II project in the lake basin which is addressing pollution loading into the lake by promoting cleaner production technologies in the industrial subsectors. The project runs into two phases, Phase 1 form 2011-2013 and Phase 2 2014-2017.
Information DisseminationThe Kenya National Cleaner Production Centre (KNCPC) is actively involved in the dissemination of information with respect to Cleaner Technologies, Environmentally sound Technologies (ESTs) and other technical enquiries. The Centre has accessibility to UNIDO’s up to date data bank on cleaner technologies in all sectors of production. It also derives information from the 45 UNIDO supported cleaner production centres around the world through an established functional network.
The centre has started a Documentation Centre that will act as a reference centre for all those who will be doing research in Cleaner Production in the country. So far the Documentation has over 500 textbooks on Cleaner Production and other related topics. Specialized CP Manuals on a sector wise basis are also available.
RESOURCE EFFICIENCY AND CLEANER PRODUCTION
The RECP process involves in plant assessment and vary from industry to industry i.e the size and nature of activities undertaken by an industry should determine the number of days an in plant assessment is undertaken. Currently we take a minimum of one day and a maximum of three days to carry out an in plant assessment. But some industries need as much as five days for the same in plant assessment. Implementation of RECP measures can realize an average of 20-30% reduction in pollutants, energy and water use and has and the economic benefits achieved in an enterprise can amounts to at least Kshs. 2-3 million per year for medium enterprises.
For large enterprises, savings per company is greater than Kshs. 5 million whilst it can be as low as Kshs. 100,000 for small enterprises. Cumulatively, companies can realize savings of at least US$ 1.38million through avoided waste generation and resource efficiency under the RECP program. Under the RECP program that is run in the centre, currently 81 enterprises in Kenya have been assessed and incorporated. This was preceded By Trainers of Trainers (ToT) workshop that were held and two participants drawn from over 68 enterprises.
POLICY DIALOGUE AND ADVICE
KNCPC has worked with relevant government departments and ministries to ensure that Kenyan Policy makers are sensitized on the need to develop policies that prioritize the ideals of Cleaner Production. The ministries departments in question are the ministries of Environment, Industry, Trade and the National Council of Science and Technology (NCST). The centre is represented at the NCST’s Earth and Science Specialist Committee that is trying to modernize and update the Kenyan Policy making strategy
Technology Transfer Issues such as the acquisition, adoption, adaptation, bargaining, licensing and permits are high on the agenda. Input of CP policy documents –examples includeIndustrialisation policy, private sector development strategy, waste management regulations, draft environment policy and SAICM, Consultancy
